WEB Laser Ablation of Luminescent Lanthanide-doped Strontium Aluminate Particles for Biomedical Applications.

Persistent luminescent particles have attracted great interest because of their potential application in biological labeling, imaging and security encoding. Strontium aluminate is a well-known host matrix for the preparation of long-persisting inorganic phosphors by dotation with a wide range of lanthanide ions. The emission color and afterglow duration can be adjusted by the choice of dopants, their combination and concentration, as well as by the crystal structure. This long-lasting material exhibits physicochemical and optical stability and is less toxic than other phosphors.

Here, we present our recent activities in the research field of the development of Eu2+, Dy3+,-doped strontium aluminate particles by laser ablation. The particle production takes place by means of laser ablation on commercial strontium aluminate. Various preparation processes, e.g. in gaseous and fluid media, were tested. The influence of preparation parameters on particle size, morphology, structure, and optical properties was investigated.

The characterization of the resulting particles was done by conventional methods such as X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and laser diffraction. In addition, the laser ablated nanoparticles are tested for non-toxicity e.g. as per ISO 10993 standards.
