Glycerol has become a widely available, renewable and inexpensive chemical as it is a byproduct of the biodiesel industry. High catalytic activity and stability have made noble metals as a potent catalyst for glycerol electro-oxidation reactions to convert it into a value-added product. Developing of a catalyst having high surface areas and preferred orientation, not only reduce the cost of catalysis but also influences the selectivity of products. Based on the previous report1, we have fabricated mesoporous Pt thin films (m-Pt) onto conducting substrate that can be directly used as a catalyst for glycerol oxidation. Platinic acid solutions that are infiltrated on water channels of liquid crystalline templates coated on metal substrates, were reduced using chronoamperometry to form the Pt network followed by removal of the template with ethanol as previously reported. The as-synthesized catalyst showed a preferred orientation along (1 1 1) direction which was identified using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopic studies revealed pores of 5-20 nm. Electrochemical surface area measurements show an enhanced electrochemical surface area of ca 400× (roughness factor).
