Topic X: Poster Session

Materials which are used in lithium-ion batteries like cobalt and lithium, increasingly cause problems due to their limited availability and sustainability. Therefore, alternative systems like sodium-ion batteries are investigated to cover applications where the highest performance is not required.

When using larger sodium ions as the charge carrier, compared to lithium, higher stresses arise in the active material due to the volume change during cycling. The magnitude of the stresses can be reduced by applying porous nanostructured particles. With lithium-ion cells, it has already been demonstrated that porous nanostructured cathode particles show improved rate capability and cycle stability. However, the processing of these porous particles into electrodes poses some challenges, such as low adhesion strength, high electrode porosity and binder migration effects.

The focus of this work is on the investigation of the interactions between inactive materials (conductive additives, binders) and the new porous nano-structured Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP).

The poster will show how the processing affects the electrode microstructure and how this correlates with electrochemical characteristics measured on the basis of full-cell tests.
